What a child eats and drinks has an impact on their oral health. During summer vacation or after school, it can be easy for kids to grab their favourite snack or beverage. Some of these choices can be just what cavity-causing bacteria thrive on. Here are some tips on how to help your kids snack smart:

  • Snack less. If possible, limit the number of snacks and beverages between meals. Frequent snacking, especially on sugary foods, can lead to an increase in cavities. When sugar is in the mouth, cavity-causing bacteria produces acid. This acid attacks the teeth and increases the risk for cavities.  
  • Drink lots of water. When it comes to a healthy smile, water is the best beverage to drink. Choose it over juice and soda between meals. Drink water after every meal and snack to clear sugars from the mouth.
  • Avoid sticky food. Hard candies, chewy caramels and dried fruit stick to teeth. This increases the length of time teeth are exposed to cavity-causing bacteria. Watch out for starchy foods like potato chips and crackers. They break down into sugars that also stick to teeth.
  • Limit sugar intake. Save the sugary favourites for occasions such as birthdays or even a Saturday. Swap sweet treats for healthier options. Keep in mind that milk contains sugars (lactose) and should be avoided between meals.  
  • Eat tooth-friendly snacks. Fruit and raw vegetables are great options. Apples and oranges have a high water content. They clear the mouth before sugars are used by cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Shop smart. Always read the nutrition facts label on food products to know the sugar content. Make sure to also check the list of ingredients. If sugar is the first ingredient, it is best to leave it at the store.
  • Talk to your dentist. Your dentist can provide nutritional advice about your child’s oral health. You can work together to prevent cavities and make sure your child has a healthy smile.
