What is the difference between the PDBNS and the NSDA?

NS Dental MagazineDr. Kyla Romard's article: Apples and Oranges: A study in contrast of the PDBNS and NSDA (Nova Scotia Dentist magazine, Feb./March 2019)

"Organizations with regulatory status, like the PDBNS, are mandated by provincial legislation to serve and protect the general public. More specifically, the PDBNS must exercise its powers and responsibilities in the public’s interest, not the interest of its members, in respect of matters related to the delivery of dental care. This mandate is achieved by regulating the practice of the profession, assuring only dentists who are properly trained, qualified and licensed can provide dental treatment and ensuring that the treatment rendered is of a reasonable standard. Licensees are governed by the provisions of the Dental Act and its regulations in order to assure the public of the knowledge, skill, proficiency and competency of its members. Though the PDBNS seemingly appears to only provide a public service, licensees should be aware that the administration of the Dental Act empowers the profession to be the sole providers of dental care for Nova Scotians."

"Professional associations, like the NSDA, are formed with the intention of representing and promoting the interests of its members. Associations act to govern themselves and focus on professional activities, lobbying, and member advocacy. The NSDA is directed by a peer-elected Governing Council consisting of 16 dentists who determine the NSDA’s goals, scope of activities and programming, under the mandate “to help dentists be better dentists in service to Nova Scotians.” This mission is achieved in the steady flow of support the NSDA offers dentists in the form of member-targeted programs and services, oral health promotion activities and partnerships with community-based organizations and the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University."

When are the NSDA membership and PDBNS licence renewal dates?

The NSDA membership year is July 1 to June 30 and the PDBNS licence year runs Dec. 1 to Nov 30.
